The Making an Erosion Bowl DVD by Neil Scobie is a must for anyone who wants to understand and enjoy turning and carving a bowl.
In his introduction Neil covers where the inspiration comes from, followed by the design and turning processes, carving with hand and power tools, sanding and finishing. Each stage is numbered so that the viewer can go straight to the particular topic, eg. turning the outside, fixing onto the chuck, carving the legs, turning the inside, carving the rim and finishing.
Neil is a great presenter and demonstrator with excellent background knowledge. He is able to explain each point clearly and he practises what he preaches. This includes tips on safety.
The drawings and sketches are clear and concise, and this helps Neil to explain what he is doing as he works toward the finished appearance. Models of gouges are used to show the problems that can occur if the viewer does not follow the conventional cutting procedures that Neil outlines.
Included in the content are many aspects of turning, introduction of the carving pole for holding turned work in your tool post, and carving on the lathe. Tools used include the Arbortech carver, Dremel motor tool, disc grinders, carving wheels, die grinder, different cutting wheels and rotary burrs, as well as a Makita angle drill with a variety of sanding pads.
There's also an introduction to hand cavring tools and how to sharpen them.
Making an Erosion Bowl is ideal for the novice turner and carver. However, the DVD also contains a lot of information that would be useful for any carver or turner wanting to advance their skills.
